Players of the Year



The Georgia State Golf Association selects annual Players of the Year in the following categories: Men, Women, Junior, Girls, Seniors and Senior Women. Players of the Year are determined by a point system based on participation and finish in GSGA and USGA events throughout the year.

The Georgia State Golf Association's Tommy Barnes Award signifies the GSGA's overall player of the year. It was established in 1998 and named after legendary amateur Tommy Barnes of Atlanta. Among his many accomplishments, Barnes won the 1941 Georgia Amateur Championship and qualified for 16 consecutive U.S. Amateur Championships. The Tommy Barnes Award winner is selected each year by the GSGA's Championship Committee.

GSGA Tommy Barnes Award

Chris Waters of Atlanta was the 2017 GSGA Tommy Barnes Award Winner. The Georgia State Golf Association's Tommy Barnes Award signifies the GSGA's overall player of the year. It was established in 1998 and named after legendary amateur Tommy Barnes of Atlanta.

GSGA Men's Player of the Year

​Chris Waters of Atlanta was the 2017 GSGA Men's Player of the Year. He put together another consistent year placing top 15 in four GSGA Championships. Waters also advanced to Match Play at the 2017 U.S. Amateur Championship.

GSGA Women's Player of the Year

​​Payton Schanen of Johns Creek was the 2017 GSGA Women's Player of the Year. The Mercer University star won her second straight Georgia Women's Amateur Championship and placed top 5 in the Georgia Women's Open.

GSGA Junior Boys' Player of the Year

​​Brandon Cho of Suwanee and Beck Burnette of Blairsville were named 2017 GSGA Junior Boys' Co-Players of the Year. Cho became the youngest winner ever of the Georgia Junior Championship. Burnette captured the Georgia PGA Junior Boys' Championship.

GSGA Junior Girls' Player of the Year

​​Caroline Craig of Sautee Nacoochee was the 2017 GSGA Girls' Player of the Year. She had a strong year with a runner-up finish in the Georgia Women's Match Play Championship and placed seventh in the Georgia Girls' Championship.

GSGA Senior Men's Player of the Year

​​Bob Royak of Alpharetta was the 2017 GSGA Senior Men's Player of the Year. He captured his first individual GSGA title by winning the 2017 Georgia Senior Championship. He also advanced to the round of 32 at the U.S. Senior Amateur.

GSGA Senior Women's Player of the Year

​​Laura Coble of Augusta was the 2017 GSGA Senior Women's Player of the Year. She captured the Georgia Senior Women's Match Play Championship and finished runner-up in the Top 60 Classic.

GSGA Super Senior Player of the Year

​​Frank Costanzo of Savannah was the 2017 GSGA Super Senior Player of the Year. He captured his first GSGA title in thrilling fashion at Big Canoe Golf Club winning the Georgia Super Senior Championship in a playoff.
