Players of the Year



The Georgia State Golf Association selects annual Players of the Year in the following categories: Men, Women, Junior, Girls, Seniors and Senior Women. Players of the Year are determined by a point system based on participation and finish in GSGA and USGA events throughout the year.

The Georgia State Golf Association's Tommy Barnes Award signifies the GSGA's overall player of the year. It was established in 1998 and named after legendary amateur Tommy Barnes of Atlanta. Among his many accomplishments, Barnes won the 1941 Georgia Amateur Championship and qualified for 16 consecutive U.S. Amateur Championships. The Tommy Barnes Award winner is selected each year by the GSGA's Championship Committee.

GSGA Tommy Barnes Award

Bob Royak of Alpharetta was the 2019 GSGA Tommy Barnes Award Winner. The Georgia State Golf Association's Tommy Barnes Award signifies the GSGA's overall player of the year. It was established in 1998 and named after legendary amateur Tommy Barnes of Atlanta.

GSGA Men's Player of the Year

David Noll, Jr., of Dalton won the Georgia Mid-Amateur Championship for the fourth time to capture the Dick Franklin Trophy. He will be inducted into the Georgia Golf Hall of Fame as part of the Class of 2020.

GSGA Women's Player of the Year

Ket Vanderpool of Marietta had a strong return to competition, earning runner-up honors at the Georgia Women's Amateur Championship. She also advanced to the round of 16 at the U.S. Women's Mid-Amateur Championship.

GSGA Junior Boys' Player of the Year

Ben Carr of Columbus earned a top-three finish at the Georgia Amateur Championship at Ansley Golf Club-Settindown Creek in Roswell. He also qualified for the U.S. Amateur Championship

Ainsley Cowart of Winston had a dominating victory at the Georgia Girls' Championship, a top-10 finish at the Georgia Women's Amateur Championship and qualified for the U.S. Junior Girls' Amateur Championship

Bob Royak of Alpharetta put together an incredible 2019 campaign, highlighted by a national title at the U.S. Senior Amateur Championship. He added trophies with wins at the Georgia Senior Match Play Championship, Georgia Senior Championship and at the Georgia Senior Four-Ball Championship

Cheryl Grigg of Sea Island won the Georgia Senior Women's Match Play Championship at Glen Arven Country Club in Thomasville and advanced to the round of 16 at the U.S. Senior Women's Amateur Championship

Deb Jackson of Johns Creek won her first Georgia Senior Women's Championship at Green Island Country Club in Columbus in 2019. She also qualified for the U.S. Women's Mid-Amateur Championship.

​​Don Marsh of Johns Creek won the Georgia Super Senior Match Play Championship at Kinderlou Forest Golf Club in Valdosta and tied for runner-up honors at the Georgia Super Senior Four-Ball Championship

The Georgia State Golf Association (GSGA) is the governing body of golf in Georgia and serves as an Allied Golf Association to the United States Golf Association (USGA). Membership in the GSGA is open to all golfers, facilities and golf clubs throughout the state.
