Players of the Year



The Georgia State Golf Association selects annual Players of the Year in the following categories: Men, Women, Junior, Girls, Seniors and Senior Women. Players of the Year are determined by a point system based on participation and finish in GSGA and USGA events throughout the year.

The Georgia State Golf Association's Tommy Barnes Award signifies the GSGA's overall player of the year. It was established in 1998 and named after legendary amateur Tommy Barnes of Atlanta. Among his many accomplishments, Barnes won the 1941 Georgia Amateur Championship and qualified for 16 consecutive U.S. Amateur Championships. The Tommy Barnes Award winner is selected each year by the GSGA's Championship Committee.

GSGA Tommy Barnes Award

Bob Royak of Alpharetta was the 2018 GSGA Tommy Barnes Award Winner. The Georgia State Golf Association's Tommy Barnes Award signifies the GSGA's overall player of the year. It was established in 1998 and named after legendary amateur Tommy Barnes of Atlanta.

GSGA Men's Player of the Year

Taylor Smith of Covington won the Georgia Mid-Amateur Championship in thrilling fashion to capture the Dick Franklin Trophy. He also finished tied for eighth at the Georgia Amateur Championship.

GSGA Women's Player of the Year

​​Bailey Tardy of Peachtree Corners had a strong return to competition, winning the GWGA Women's Amateur Championship. The UGA star also qualified for the U.S. Women's Amateur, advancing to the round of 16.

GSGA Junior Boys' Player of the Year

Grant Sutliff of Cumming had a strong year placing in the top 3 at the Georgia Amateur Championship, and in the top 6 at the Georgia Junior Championship. The Kennesaw State golfer also qualified for the U.S. Amateur.

GSGA Junior Girls' Player of the Year

Kate Owens of Suwanee finished runner-up at the Georgia Girls' Championship and placed eighth at the Georgia Top 60 Women's Classic. She also helped lead Team Georgia to victory at the Georgia-South Carolina Girls' Junior Challenge Match.

GSGA Senior Men's Player of the Year

Bob Royak of Alpharetta had a strong year that included the Georgia PGA Senior Open title. He also qualified for the U.S. Senior Amateur for the second-straight year and the U.S. Amateur Four-Ball Championship.

GSGA Senior Women's Player of the Year

​​Brenda Pictor of Marietta captured the Georgia Senior Women's Match Play Championship for the second consecutive year and placed runner-up at the GSGA Senior Women's Championship. She also qualified for three USGA events.

​​Al Small of Savannah successfully defended his title at the Georgia Super Senior Four-Ball Championship and earned runner-up honors at the Georgia Super Senior Match Play Championship.
