On this day in 1989, Nancy Lopez won her third major at the LPGA Championship. After a three-put on hole 10 that put her two strokes behind the leader, she rebounded with five birdies to win the championship by three shots.
This was Lopez’s third LPGA Championship. She made headlines in her rookie year, winning nine tournaments. Over the course of her career she won 48 LPGA events, including three majors. As an amateur she won the U.S. Girls Championship twice in 1972 and 1974. Lopez brought a mix of talent, charisma, and competitiveness that helped the game grow.
