ALBANY - David Denham of Athens and Dalton Melnyk of Atlanta led or had a share of the lead for most of the week as they captured the Georgia Four-Ball Championship at Doublegate Country Club! The 53rd playing of the championship was contested April 25-27.
Denham and Melnyk began the week with a 7-under 65 knocking in an eagle and six birdies to offset a lone bogey to share the lead going into the second round. The duo followed it up with another strong performance at 8-under 64 to take a one-shot lead into the final 18 holes of action.
The final round saw a ton of birdies from the 36 teams that made the cut at 6-under (138), and Denham and Melnyk saved their best to hold off the field.
On the front nine, Denham began the day with a birdie on the par-4 first and third holes before Melynk caught fire knocking in five birdies on the next six holes with Denham adding one of his own on the par-5 7th. The run put the duo at 8-under for the front nine and kept them just ahead of several charging teams.
After two pars to start the back nine, Denham rolled in two more birdies on the par-4 12th and par-5 13th and the duo captured two more along the way to finish with a 12-under 60 for the day and 27-under overall (65-64-60) to win by two strokes. Their performance tied the championship scoring record in relation to par joining Ben Carr and Jake Maples (2020 at Country Club of Columbus).
For Denham, the victory marked his third GSGA title adding to his wins at the 2004 Georgia Amateur Championship and 2017 Georgia Mid-Amateur Championship, while Melnyk picked up his first GSGA title.
