Joiner brothers keeping the Southwest close
HAWKINSVILLE, GA- The Northwest section holds an extremely narrow lead – less than a point separates them from the Southwest section –after the first round of the Junior Sectional Challenge Match which is being held at Southern Hills Golf Club July 27-28.
Levi Nix of Lafayette is fueling the Northwest, which has 33.86 points, with a 72 in the Boys 16-17 division as well as Villa Rica’s Austin Fulton who shot 37 in the Boys 11 and under. The Northwest is also leading two girls divisions. Stephanie Vandiver of Douglasville shot 78 in the Girls’ 14-17 and Abigail Bolt of Woodstock shot 43 in the Girls’ 11 and under division.
The Southwest section is barely behind the Northwest with 33.32 points. Pacing the Southwest is strong performances by the Joiner brothers from Albany – Jacob in the Boys’ 14-15 and Tyler in the Boys’ 12-13 – as well as two players finishing in the top three of the Boys’ 11 and under. Jacob shot an even-par 72 to take six points in the Boys’ 14-15 while brother Tyler tied for the tournament-low round of 2-under-par 70 in the Boys’ 12-13.
The West section rounds out the top three thanks to the strong play of Columbus’s Stanton Schorr. Schorr, competing in the Boys’ 12-13, was the other player who shot a tournament-low 70 to tie for first in the age group after day one. Annie Swords of Newnan also came through for the West with a first-place 39 in the Girls’ 12-13.
On Tuesday evening, all competitors participated in a long drive and 9-hole putting contest, as well as attended the annual cookout. Results will be available in the final round press release.
The Junior Sectional Challenge Match is a statewide competition that brings together the top performers from the summer-long GSGA Junior Sectional Program. Participants earned the opportunity to compete and represent their section in the tournament by accumulating points in their section's qualifying events. Each of the seven geographic sections sends their top four point earners from each boys age division, the top three from each Girls’ 14-17 division and the top two from the Girls’ 12-13 and 11 and under divisions to the Challenge Match. The team winner, or winning section, is determined by cumulative points earned based on order of finish in the various age divisions during each round.
The Junior Sectional Program began in 1974 and was established by the Georgia State Golf Association as a grassroots effort to provide juniors across the state with the opportunity to experience competitive golf.
Founded in 1916, the Georgia State Golf Association (GSGA) received its official charter on June 24, 1924. Since that date, the GSGA has grown to one of the largest state amateur golf associations in the country, with over 355 member clubs and 85,000 individual members. With a mission to promote and preserve amateur golf in the state of Georgia, GSGA offers a computerized handicapping service, course rating and measuring, and annually conducts a full schedule of statewide competitions for men and women of all age groups. Other services include a summer-long junior sectional program, award-winning Golf Georgia magazine, membership recognition and rewards programs and a charitable foundation administering two college scholarship programs.
