The GSGA was founded in 1916 by 26 Member Clubs, with the primary purpose being to conduct a state amateur championship.
The GSGA was incorporated in 1924 and was run by volunteers over the next five decades. Among its milestones, the GSGA began rating courses in 1961, added the Junior Championship in 1966 and began administering the handicap system in 1972, before adding its first full-time staff director in 1973.
In more recent decades, the GSGA has seen extensive growth in membership, volunteers, staff and services.
The GSGA's membership consists of nearly 350 golf clubs and their 75,000 individual members. Member Clubs include public, semi-private, private and military golf courses, as well as associate clubs "without real estate." Individuals become members of the GSGA by joining through one of GSGA's Member Clubs, using one of two methods:
The Georgia State Golf Association provides a variety of benefits and services for both Member Clubs and their individual members. Member Clubs may utilize the computerized handicapping service, have their course rated and measured, provide employees an opportunity to earn scholarships through the GSGA Foundation, and receive golf industry support from the GSGA and its allied associations. Individuals receive an official USGA Handicap Index, a subscription to Golf Georgia magazine, and are eligible for the GSGA awards program as well as numerous statewide competitions and Member Play Days.
Both GSGA Member Clubs and individual members benefit from the resources of the Georgia State Golf Association, including rules assistance, tournament guidelines and preparation, handicapping and historical archives.
