In 2004, the GSGA teamed up with the USGA to expand its Girls' Program and establish a one-year pilot project focusing on growing girls golf within the state through the LPGA-USGA Girls Golf program. Goals of this partnership included increasing the number of LPGA-USGA Girls Golf sites in Georgia, building strong relationships between the sites and the GSGA, and ultimately providing more opportunities for girls in Georgia to learn and enjoy the game of golf.
LPGA-USGA Girls Golf, which celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2009, was formed to connect girls, ages 7 to 17, with the game of golf. A developmental junior golf program and the only national initiative of its kind, Girls Golf presents an opportunity for girls to make lasting friendships, gain self-confidence, learn to compete and have fun, while fostering a lifetime of enjoyment for the game. Girls Golf is administered through a partnership between The Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) Foundation and the United States Golf Association (USGA), both 501(c)(3) charitable organizations.
In 2008, more than 5,700 girls, ages seven to 17, participated at over 180 sites nationwide. The program offers a 16-session instruction module, which includes a five-level progressive learning system on the course, starting from the green and moving back to the tee. Many LPGA-USGA Girls Golf sites have year-round activities, meeting monthly during the school year and weekly during the summer months.
LPGA-USGA Girls Golf sites are coordinated by site directors who are LPGA or PGA professionals, USGA members, volunteers, parents or members of local golf associations. Each individual program covers the costs of access fees, snacks, special events, awards, instruction and other miscellaneous expenses. Costs are offset through fund raising, membership dues, and the matching grants program funded by the USGA. The matching grants program provides financial assistance for instruction, equipment, and course and range access.
